What/Who is SOLID STAVE?

At Solid Stave we build drum shells using the stave shell construction method. Stave drum shells are made from vertical pieces of wood that are cut to size, glued into a cylinder, and then lathed into a perfectly round drum shell. We believe the stave method produces the optimum sounding and performing drum shell. There are several reasons why. First, our shells use 10% of the glue that traditional ply shells use. Glue does not resonate well, therefore the more glue used the muddier the sound and the less resonant a drum shell will be. Second, the vertically oriented wood grain causes the bearing edge to be on the stronger end-grain of the wood. This enables the drum to be louder, more responsive, and able to be tuned lower, because the energy transfer from the drum head travels easily with the grain instead of across it. Third, the wood is in its natural state, unlike steam bent one-ply shells, which are under a tremendous amount of pressure. That pressure raises the drum's pitch and muddies its tone.  When you play your first stave drum, you will be hooked forever, just like we were!
